This discussion addresses the following outcome: Articulate popular conceptions and stereotypes of pirates based on movies and books, including Treasure Island (CO#5). Pirates are a popular topic in modern U.S. culture. In our first discussion, we will consider some of the current assumptions about pirates, many of which can be traced back to the children’s novel Treasure Island (1883). Before engaging in this discussion, read the Module Notes, the website Ten Facts about Pirates (Links to an external site.), and view the assigned film Treasure Island (Links to an external site.) (1950). You may also want to skim through the book Treasure Island (Links to an external site.) (1883) available through the Excelsior College Library. Then, post an initial response of at least 250 words that considers the following: Treasure Island presents several images of pirates that have informed how popular culture (movies, plays, television shows, etc.) depicts them, even today. After watching the 1950 movie adaptation, describe its depiction of pirates. How do they live? Speak? Dress? Act? How does the movie present pirates as different from other people? What other assumptions and stereotypes from popular culture have informed your own conception of pirates coming into this course?
