PEER PRESENTED: Unit 2 Discussion- Bioethical issues in nursing A bioethical issue that could be faced as a nurse is Spirituality, having a patient that would live with a blood transfusion but could die without it and the patient refuses the blood transfusion because it's against their religion or cultural practices. The process of working through your own personal values and professional ethics in a real situation would be to clarify the ethical dilemma, gather additional data, identify options, make a decision, act, and evaluate. I feel you should put your focus on your responsibilities at that time rather than personal decisions. As a nurse you should always respect the fact that everyone is different, and you should respect that others lifestyle, culture, and religious beliefs will be different than yours. The outcome to this situation would be to respect the clients wishes. As a nurse I feel you and the doctor would discuss with the client that having this blood transfusion would save your life and if not, you have a chance of dying. If the client still refuses you should not express your thoughts or opinions. I feel the patient should still be treated with respect, dignity, and made as comfortable as possible although you may not agree with their choice.
