Tina's Post: “Nurses are a critical part of healthcare and make up the largest section of the health profession. According to the World Health Statistics Report, there are approximately 29 million nurses and midwives globally, with 3.9 million of those individuals in the United States. Estimates of upwards of one million additional nurses will be needed by 2020.According to The American Nurses Association (ANA), more registered nurse jobs will be available through 2022 than any other profession in the United States. According to an article in the Nursing Times, The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 11 million additional nurses are needed to avoid a further shortage. Employment opportunities for nurses are projected to grow at a faster rate (15%) than all other occupations from 2016 through 2026 (Lisa et., all). The cause of the shortage is actually three-fold: an aging population, an aging workforce, and a limited supply of new nurses. “For sustained change and assurance of an adequate supply of nurses, solutions must be developed in several areas: education, healthcare delivery systems, policy and regulations, and image. This shortage is not solely nursing's issue and requires a collaborative effort among nursing leaders in practice and education, health care executives, government, and the media” (Brenda et., all). “California Strategic Planning Committee for Nursing (CSPCN) in addressing the issues from a public policy perspective. CSPCN and its colleagues must continue the political action necessary to recruit nurses into the profession, increase the diversity of the workforce, continue support for state schools, increase scholarships for students enrolled in private schools, and develop smooth articulation plans for LVNs and ADNs to continue their education. It is important for it to include consumers into the initiatives to insure that the people of California receive the best of nursing care from an adequate and well-prepared nursing work force” (Sarah et., all).
