It is important for health care professionals and nurses because it allows them to communicate with their patients better. This would fulfill the purpose of eliminating health disparities to equally improve the health of all. For example, when my aunt was pregnant with her first child, she experienced the consequences of not having health literacy. She had a lot of questions about what to expect during pregnancy and childbirth; still, she found it difficult to understand the information that her healthcare provider was giving her. As a result, she didn't feel confident in her ability to make well-informed decisions about her health and the health of her child. Six Healthy People 2030 Initiatives goals are based on health literacy. They put emphasis on the importance of organizations being able to provide easily understandable information to everyone equally as well as improving the ability of the individuals to use the health information to make well-informed decisions. There are two of these objectives that would greatly benefit my community. The first one is to decrease the proportion of adults who report poor communication with their health care provider. I choose it because as a healthcare worker, on multiple occasions, I have been told by patients how the doctor goes in and out of their room so fast they cannot understand what is happening to their health. The other one is increasing the health literacy of the population. This one is also important in my community because even if the healthcare provider would try to explain everything in detail, patients would not be able to understand it if they do not have a basic knowledge of the illness or health process in the first place. One intervention that could be used is to provide health literacy communication training for health care providers. This intervention would be effective in my community because it would help ensure that health care providers learn to communicate effectively with patients. Another intervention would be to provide health literacy education for adults in the community. Health literacy can be improved through the provision of information, effective communication, and structured education (Nutbeam et al., 2017). This would help ensure that people can understand the health information they need to make informed decisions about their health. Furthermore, another intervention would be educating adolescents through formal education in schools to ensure the upcoming generations grow up understanding health literacy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2- Jessie Health literacy can be described as the ability to access, understand, and apply health information and is considered as one of the health determinants (Nesari et al, 2019). Health care professional play a crucial role in providing understandable health information to the public, which consequently, reduce health literacy demands on health consumers. Nurses according to studies, should assume that all patients and their families have low health literacy and that they have challenges understanding (Wittenberg et al. 2018). There was a time where my grandfather was in hospital and I could not understand why they kept on checking his blood sugar levels. Later on, a nurse explained to me that they were monitoring his vitals to ensure that he was stable before discharging him. The Healthy People initiative is designed to guide national health promotion and disease prevention efforts which are aimed at improving the health of the nation (CDC, 2018). Healthy People 2030 provide science-based national health objectives targeting to improve the health and well-being of Americans. Healthy People 2030 is linked to health literacy in that the framework aims to attain health literacy as an overarching goal and the foundational principle to achieve health and well-being (Santana et al. 2021). Health organization needs to have the ability to make health-related information and services equally accessible and comprehensible to all. I will focus on two of the objectives including promoting healthy development, healthy behaviors and well-being across all life stages, and secondly, engage leadership, key constituents, and the public across multiple sectors to take action and design policies that improve the health and well-being of all (Santana et al. 2021). These two objectives are appropriate in the community where I live because there are numerous cases of unhealthy behaviors such as abuse of drugs and physical inactivity. In addition, there lacks policies that improve the health of individuals as the quality of healthcare provided is poor. Therefore, as a nurse, I will be able to advocate for their health by for example, mobilizing resources for free clinic camps in the community. One of the specific intervention in promoting healthy development, healthy behaviors and well-being is by conducting training at the community level. Training camps can be organized where people are trained on healthy habits such as nutritious diets, engaging in exercises, and maintaining healthy weight as these are some of the socioeconomic issues affecting the community. Due to poverty, majority of the community members prefer to consume junk food which is readily available and affordable. The other intervention is ensuring that there is a patient-centered approach where the nurse educates a patient on various health promoting activities due to the low health literacy levels in the community. The other intervention is joining nursing union where I am able to advocate for the health needs of the community as well as taking leadership positions where I am able to influence key policies such as quality healthcare for all. For example, employing health workers that communicate in Spanish to care for patients and ensuring that the workers have undergone cultural competence training. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Reply to my both peers separately - 3x3 and 2 references , not old than 2015 APA 7 EDT
